My name is Tyler Abels and I won the KXNO Reporter of the day. By winning this contest I experienced what a day is like to be a member of the media.
When I arrived I was met by a member of the Iowa Events Center and he gave me and one of my buddies our media passes to access press row. He escorted us up to press row to show us our seats. Press row was on the 3rd level center court. The vantage point was spectacular. Press row had tables and plug-in for electronics, a TV and a personal bathroom. It was neat to see all the names of all the press members and where they would be sitting.
The first game between UNI and ISU was probably the better game out of the two. UNI was up for the majority of the game, and at one point UNI was up by as much as 18 points. In the second half ISU came charging back with a 23-2 run due to poor free throw shooting from the Panthers and some big shots made from Melvin Ejim, DeAndre Kane and Georges Niang who scored a career high 22 points. ISU seemed to have locked up the win but late in the game DeAndre Kane missed a free throw that would have put the Cyclones up by 4, but instead gave the Panthers life only being down by 3. After a failed possession UNI had the ball with less than 10 seconds and Seth Tuttle hit a desperation three that banked in tie the game. The game went into overtime and the Cyclones proved to be too much for the Panthers to handle, winning 91-82.
The last game of the night was between Iowa and Drake. The first half was exciting as Drake kept it close for the majority of it but late in first half the Hawkeyes started to pull away. In the second half the Hawkeyes extended their lead to 23 points. Iowa won the game 83-66.
After the Iowa vs. Drake game my buddy and I sat in on the Hawkeyes Press conference. We sat in the second row and heard questions for the players and Coach McCaffery. I thought the last question of the night was pretty funny as a reporter asked Coach McCaffery what his thoughts were about the upcoming game next Friday and McCaffery just said that they have a game on Monday and that was the end of the press conference.
I would have to say the highlight of the night is when I was able to meet NBA great Tim Hardaway who is now a scout for the Miami Heat. He seemed very down to earth. I also talked to Jim Brinson in between games and got his take on sports. That guy knows a lot about sports.
Being a sports reporter for a day was cool and interesting. The job seems a lot harder than most people think. I think most sports fans (including my wife) think that it would be awesome to be a reporter. Most people probably think it looks so easy because all you have to do is talk on the radio or ask questions but it is so much more than that. From my personal experience it looks that easy because the sports reporters are that good.
